About the role

We are looking for a Manager – Brand, Communications & Events to be responsible for implementation of campaigns and events in Australia and on the West Coast and manage Australian communication channels to support Rio Tinto’s reputation.  The role will work closely with key leaders including VP, CR Australia, Chief Adviser Media, GPL, Brand and Reputation and GM, Iron ore C&C to ensure content on Australian communication channels is aligned to regulatory requirements and enhances reputation.  The role will be responsible for tactical deployment of internal communications aligned to the Australia strategy and Group employee communications strategy.

Based in Perth and reporting to the Chief Advisor – Brand, Communications and Communities - Australia, you will be entrusted with responsibilities across key areas in Branding, Employee Communications, Digital, and Events:  

  • Support the Chief adviser, Brand, Communications and Communities, Australia to develop and implement a brand, reputation and communications strategy in Australia that supports the group strategy and is aligned with the broader Corporate Relations strategy and the Australia country strategy.

  • Brand-led consultancy across multiple levels of the organisation. 

  • Message and content development, including placement and execution.

  • Influencing metric development strategies for Rio Tinto’s brand and reputation management effectiveness.

  • Creative ideation for a variety of stakeholder communications programmes and strategies (internal and external).

  • Hands-on problem solving and identification of opportunities to improve communications effectiveness. 

  • Partnering with GPLs, functional leaders and product groups and external consultancies (eg PR, brand, advertising agencies).

  • Relationship development and coalition building across diverse teams of internal stakeholders.

  • Manage small team to support implement of events across Australia. 

Brand

  • Ensure Rio Tinto’s reputation is enhanced and maintained through effective reputation and brand leadership, which includes supporting the overall framework implementation, profile building with senior leads, and supporting sophisticated PR campaigns in line with in-country business objectives, projects, including major business decision and results.

  • Support communities team to communicate workplace giving, community investment approach and indigenous strategy. 

Employee communications

  • Support employee communications strategy and plan, and ensure alignment in Australia including leading employee communications on sensitive and transformation work in Australia.

  • Support VP, CR Australia communications activities.

  • Advise key stakeholders and businesses in Australia on communications activity to drive our license to operate, increase employee engagement, and ultimately increase shareholder value. 

Digital Media

  • Align with the group digital channel strategy in Australia to enhance reputation and drive alignment with global digital team.

  • Manage social media responses in conjunction with media and IR team.

  • Work in partnership with the East Coast Brand and Communications lead to implement digital activities consistently across the country. 

Events and site visits

  • Lead event strategy for National events and West Coast events. 

  • Lead team to manage site visits to West Coast operations.

  • Advise key stakeholders and businesses in Australia on events activity to ensure strong return on investment, consistency in approach and manage suppliers for speech writing and event collateral. 

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in communications, brand, PR, marketing, language, and/or arts and social sciences.

  • At least 8 years’ of progressive experience in communications/public relations/brand/B2B marketing for blue-chip companies or via reputable global communications agencies. Preference will be given to those with in-house B2B

  • experience, or experience of B2B clients.

  • Demonstrated experience in project managing, and working through a networked organisation in achieving results.

  • Experience in developing and implementing brand development and reputation building strategies.

  • Strong, creative copywriting skills (with examples of work) in a public relations or brand development context.

  • A big-picture thinker with the ability to readily identify opportunities and trends, and translate them into content. 

  • Impeccable interpersonal skills, including a high level of discretion and diplomacy, and ability to manage conflict and achieve winning outcomes in a consensus-driven culture. 

  • Broad Rio Tinto experience, particularly in Australia, would be an advantage

  • A good understanding of Rio Tinto Australia’s key stakeholders and relationships would be an advantage

Corporate Relations is a global team providing expertise and advice across all aspects of external affairs, stakeholder engagement, social risk management, communication, brand management and media relations.

The Brand, Communications and Communities team provides strategic counsel and process development support on brand building and reputation management projects across the Rio Tinto group. From day-to-day stewardship of our Group brand strategy, to brand development across its business units and priority markets, the team partners at multiple levels within the organisation to deliver positioning strategies, value proposition development, stakeholder-oriented focus and associated project deliverables across a variety of communications channels. Key to this is helping build the business’s understanding of the value of brand and reputation.
