The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.

The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General's Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Overview of the Branch and Section:

The Corporate and Case Systems Branch, within the Home Affairs ICT Division, is responsible for:

  • Designing and developing innovative solutions to support the business using SAP (HR and Finance), Microsoft products for online channels and various technologies to develop and enhance our Case Management Systems
  • Developing standards, patterns and frameworks that support the provision of a number of enterprise functions such as User Experience, IT Capacity management and performance testing, as well as setting the standards for our online channels and case management systems.

The ICT Capacity and Performance Management (ICTCaPM) section provides enterprise-wide functions and services that improve the organisation's capabilities though ICT capacity and performance management. The section aims to:

  • Contribute to the continuous quality improvement of ICT applications and business processes
  • Help application developers and projects deliver systems that meet both functional and non-functional requirements
  • Help the Department make capacity and performance decisions by providing stakeholders with timely, accurate and detailed information about ICT systems and components.

About the role:

The Test Automation Manager will manage a medium-sized team and report to the Director, ICT Capacity and Performance Management. The position is responsible for leading a group of highly-skilled test automation analysts who are deployed to a wide range of projects and programs in multiple locations and setting the direction for test automation.

The role requires a strong understanding test automation so they can advise programs about the value of test automation, as well as how to best deploy automation resources effectively. They will drive the delivery of test automation results to projects and programs across the Department. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as an ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Specific duties/responsibilities:

  • Contribute to strategy and innovation for the test automation capability to increase efficiencies in delivery of quality outcomes, and advocate for test automation and its benefits across the organisation
  • Liaise with various test managers, project and delivery managers, and key stakeholders to identify test automation candidates, undertake estimates, and maintain schedules to deliver programs of work
  • Manage a team of resources working on various projects with multiple deliverables, including planning, development, and execution of automation testing activities
  • Manage reporting, escalate risks and issues, and maintain quality standards for the Test Automation Team.

Role requirements/qualifications:

  • Demonstrate well-developed stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in a technical ICT context
  • Experience in complex ICT software development environments
  • Experience in ICT applications, and their integration and dependencies with each other
  • Extensive knowledge on Software Development Lifecycle
  • Experience with or understanding of Software Test Automation Lifecycle
  • Experience with or understanding of Agile test automation and DevOps-based delivery models
  • At least seven years’ experience as a software test analyst with at least one year of team lead or test manager role in large organisations in highly complex environments.

  • Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance
  • Undergo a health assessment (where applicable).
