The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.

The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General's Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Overview of the Branch and Section:

The Corporate and Case Systems Branch, within the Home Affairs ICT Division, is responsible for:

  • Designing and developing innovative solutions to support the business using SAP (HR and Finance), Microsoft products for online channels and various technologies to develop and enhance our Case Management Systems
  • Developing standards, patterns and frameworks that support the provision of a number of enterprise functions such as User Experience, IT Capacity management and performance testing, as well as setting the standards for our online channels and case management systems.

Corporate Systems Support is accountable for the administration of a number of the Department’s Corporate Management Systems including the Department’s financial and human resource system SAP.

The Section provides direct support to the SAP finance and human resource technical team and various system stakeholders throughout the Department. Corporate Systems Support also administers approximately 12 separate SAP and related systems. In addition, the Section provides second and third level resolver group services for SAP as well as assisting various ICT stakeholders complete mandatory Business As Usual (BAU) and project related activities. These include: monthly server security patching; project support activities; system refreshes; update, build and configure new and existing systems and decommissioning of legacy systems; and change and release management activities related to SAP.

About the role: 

The successful applicant will work as part of the SAP BASIS team in the Corporate Systems Support Section under broad guidance from the Director. They will be responsible for a full range of SAP BASIS functions in both a BAU and project support context. The position also has the requirement to provide third level resolver groups functions, rostered 24x7 on-call support and undertake ad-hoc and scheduled out of hours work.

Specific duties/responsibilities:

  • Contribute to strategy and innovation for SAP capabilities to increase efficiencies in delivering quality outcomes
  • Stay current with, and implement, industry best practices and metrics to help the team and its processes continuously improve
  • Analyse and resolve complex SAP system issues via third level resolver group functions
  • Monitor all SAP systems including but not limited to work processes, user system logs, short dumps, developer traces, system traces, disk space and interfaces via daily system checks
  • Implement complex technical changes to the SAP environment using structured approaches that minimise risk and achieve high reliability, availability and performance of each SAP system and/or instance.

Role requirements/qualifications:


  • Extensive (preferably 10+ years) SAP BASIS/NetWeaver Administration experience
  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems Management, or a related discipline, and training and certifications in one or more of the following: SAP NetWeaver, SAP ERP, SAP Portal, SAP FIORI, SAP SRM, SAP PI/XI, SAP BW, SOLMAN, HANA and ITIL
  • Expertise in SAP Identity Management, SAP Single Sign-On Technology configuration including experience with integrating SAP Fiori and Portal with SAP ECC, SAP BW and GRC and other systems.

  • Undergo a health assessment (where applicable).
