The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.

The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General's Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Overview of the Branch and Section:

The Corporate and Case Systems Branch, within the Home Affairs ICT Division, is responsible for:

  • Designing and developing innovative solutions to support the business using SAP (HR and Finance), Microsoft products for online channels and various technologies to develop and enhance our Case Management Systems.
  • Developing standards, patterns and frameworks that support the provision of a number of enterprise functions such as User Experience, IT Capacity management and performance testing, as well as setting the standards for our online channels and case management systems.

The Corporate and Case Systems Delivery Management section provides branch level support for all aspects of project delivery. It is the entry point for dependency work across other ICT delivery branches and works collaboratively to facilitate the allocation and delivery of work packages coming in and out of the branch.

The team is responsible for developing the branch view of the forward work plan and is an escalation point for project managers in resolving delivery issues.

Corporate and Case Delivery Management provides general coordination of project reporting within the branch and is a contact point for PMO and business engagement.

About the role:

The solution architect will be required to document a range of solution architecture design artefacts that will enable business outcomes and meet functional and non-functional requirements for the Corporate & Case systems domains. Under general direction, you will work across multiple projects and be responsible for ensuring project artefacts are of high quality and adhere to the Department’s technology standards, frameworks and patterns.

In an architecture context, you will act as liaison between the project team and the Department’s various architecture and security areas to deliver fit for purpose solutions, and will brief the appropriate governance boards and design authorities.

Specific duties/responsibilities:

  • Review, interpret and respond to detailed business requirements to ensure alignment between customer expectations and current or future ICT capability
  • Provide input to the strategic direction of technology investments to assist in the development of the enterprise architecture and maximise the return on technology investment
  • Define and design technology solutions to assist the business in meeting their business objectives, within the agreed enterprise architecture
  • Identify system, infrastructure and project interdependencies and balance competing demands to ensure project deliverables are achieved
  • Develop architecture artefacts within project time frames including solution overviews, high-level and detailed-level designs and solution security architectures.

Role requirements/qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience developing technology solutions with medium to large government organisations preferred
  • Tertiary and/or industry qualification in solution architecture and/or software engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate architecture decisions efficiently 
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise own workload
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICT Enterprise Architecture methodologies, frameworks and standards such as The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF)
  • Demonstrated experience designing solutions covering many of the following technology capabilities:
    • ERP/CRM systems (Siebel, MS Dynamics, SAP, PEGA)
    • Integration including REST, API Gateway and ESB
    • Cloud solutions – IAAS, PAAS or SAAS
    • AI and Machine Learning
    • CI/CD and DevOps
    • Cyber Security.
