Catastrophe Risk Analyst

Willis Reinsurance Australia, which is part of the Willis Towers Watson group, is seeking a driven individual to join the Sydney based Australia and Asia-Pacific Catastrophe Analytics team. This is part of the wider Willis Reinsurance Analytics team which supports Willis Reinsurance’s operations regionally and globally, but specifically in the Australasia and Asia-Pacific Region. The team assists clients in analysing the risk to their business from all aspects of natural perils and catastrophes. Clients include insurance companies, reinsurers and governments.

We are seeking an individual with previous experience in Catastrophe Modelling and strong spatial analysis and database management skills. Ideally the candidate has proven catastrophe modelling experience, using multiple vendor modelling platforms and analysing all property classes and complex financial structures. The position entails direct client interaction and therefore strong communication skills are essential.

The Role

  • Catastrophe modelling and working with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) – both commercial and in-house software

  • Assisting with the development of catastrophe risk models and solutions for the purpose of quantifying and/or assessing natural peril risk

  • Real-time reporting and analysis of natural peril events and supporting clients post event

  • Report writing and presentations to clients

  • Researching issues relating to natural peril risk, including flood, storm, bushfire and cyclone

  • Data review and analysis, including working with databases and geodatabases

  • Developing experience and expertise in reinsurance and financial modelling

  • Maintaining and updating databases

  • Compliance and general administration duties

  • Support achievement of our team’s financial goals by working efficiently, helping to contain costs where possible and identifying and raising with colleagues any process improvement suggestions

  • Contribute to sales and marketing efforts by drafting proposals and responses to RFP’s

  • Work with account teams to deliver risk solutions to clients

  • Liaising with offices and teams world-wide, which could involve local and overseas travel

  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team culture

  • Build strong relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams

The Requirements

  • A degree in a numerate or hazard related subject such as Spatial Science, Geo-Science, Seismology, Atmospheric Science, Geography, Meteorology or a related Engineering or Analytical subject
  • Prior knowledge of reinsurance and catastrophe modelling is essential
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is higly regarded
  • Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail
  • Previous experience and competence in SQL, MS Excel is essential, as well as intermediate proficiency in the remainder of the MS Office packages
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritise project work
  • Ability to process and understand data quickly and creatively
  • The ability to work in a team and autonomously and highly motivated to learn and grow within a global market leader
