A Cryptologic Linguist role is exciting, challenging and immensely rewarding. You’ll use language and analytical skills to provide key information to the Command team. You’ll be supported by classified Government intelligence programs to analyse, interpret and translate foreign language material in real-time; both at sea and ashore. The intelligence that you provide has a direct impact on operations all around the world.
Whilst, all Cryptologic Linguists receive formal language training they do not normally perform the role of an interpreter or other linguistics roles not associated with their primary intelligence role.
Teamwork is an important part of the role. You’ll work in a close-knit team that really rely on each other. There are also many opportunities for career growth and travel; all while making a difference to the defence of Australia and her Interests.
The training Linguists receive include, but are not limited to:
- Learning a language other than English,
- Information technology processes, like typing and software manipulation,
- Analytical techniques and methodical problem-solving,
- Communications theory and networks,
- Methods for working with intelligence information,
- The ‘order of battle’ of foreign military forces,
- Procedures for safeguarding intelligence information.
In addition to specialist duties, you’ll be required to take part in normal Navy activities while on-the-job. Some of these include emergency response, cleaning, and general ship duties.
Prior experience isn’t needed. You’ll gain all the necessary skills and qualifications to become a Cryptologic Linguists as part of your training.

Be paid to train and learn the skills required to become a qualified Cryptologic Linguist. Upon completion of your initial military and initial employment training, you’ll enjoy a competitive starting salary package of up to: $85,154 including service and uniform allowances, as well as a Maritime Allowance (if applicable).
In addition to your salary, you will receive generous superannuation, housing subsidies and free medical and dental.
For this role, you must be over 17 at time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen and have passed Year 10 English and Maths. An aptitude to learn a foreign language is essential (you’ll be tested before being accepted).
