AUS (Sydney / Melbourne) - Senior Manager, Tech Sector Business Relations, Department For International Trade, C4(L)


Main purpose of job:

The purpose of this job is to support the UK Government’s objectives in Australia by leading, developing and delivering support for UK commercial interests in one of the UK’s most important industrial sectors: digital tech. You will play an important role in the UK Government’s network in Australia both developing strategy and delivery plans to help develop business opportunities. This is part of a wider collaborative effort on digital tech as a part of our effort in Australia to develop the international impact of UK industrial policy in this area. You will work with high growth and globally competitive companies from the UK and Australia. The role can be based in either Sydney or Melbourne and is a key part of the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) team in Australia and New Zealand.   You will also work closely with counterparts in other markets in the DIT Asia Pacific region.

Roles and responsibilities:

This exciting and important role requires you to provide strategic support for UK companies developing their digital technology business in Australia.  You will formulate and execute strategies to build a pipeline of innovative UK companies with capability to win business here.   You will also support DIT colleagues on export delivery work across the Australia New Zealand network in other business sectors where digital tech plays an important role such as health, infrastructure, security and professional services.

You will have superior communication, business consulting and relationship management skills with the ability to build rapport quickly. You will understand how to develop and leverage industry networks and share knowledge and expertise with colleagues across ANZ and the UK.  As a team player you will be part of a global organisation working with colleagues across Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific and the UK.  You will be part of the tech expert network for the wider Asia Pacific Region led from Singapore.  

You will have expertise in strategy, marketing, planning and execution as well as an ability to provide thought leadership internally and externally.  You will find innovative ways to connect and develop relationships that enable UK companies to enter and do business in ANZ, managing a wide range of stakeholders in market and in the UK. This will include building capability, identifying and facilitating strategic introductions, market analysis and commissioning research where necessary. 

A self starter, you will also generate your own opportunities and areas of UK/ANZ collaboration, working with Australian and UK peak bodies and experts.  You will liaise with teams across the Department for International Trade in the UK and build a strong network across the 9 English regions to identify leads to build a pipeline and grow digital trade between the UK and Australia.

You will work collaboratively across the network to organise and support inward visits and delegations from Australia to the UK and other high level visits throughout the year. 

You will also provide strategic advice on Australian, New Zealand, UK and global digital technology policy, practice and developments, including key government and commercial procurement planning, sharing insights with UK colleagues across Australia and New Zealand, including Science and Innovation Network and economic policy colleagues, and supporting activity linked to the UK’s industrial Grand Challenges.

This role involves the management of one direct line-report based in Melbourne. You will contribute to the overall DIT export target as part of an Asia Pacific Regional Trade Plan.  You will also be responsible for managing and reporting on budgets and expenditure, accurately tracking and forecasting.  The role will include interstate travel and some international travel to the UK when that becomes possible again.
