The Opportunity

The role will provide support to the Mayor and Councillors to assist them in implementing their vision for the Council and the Local Government Area as per the Community Strategic Plan. You will also be required to assist the Mayor with media and community enquiries, the management of social media and public and community events.

The position is a temporary position up to 12 months commencing Monday 2 November 2020.

In this role, you will have an opportunity to:

  • Act as a central point of contact for the Mayor and Councillors media enquiries
  • Prepare draft media releases on behalf of the Mayor in conjunction with the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement team
  • Provide some video, photographic, audio recording and basic editing support to Mayoral media opportunities
  • Assist in the preparation of Mayoral village visits, special events and civic events, including outside regular office hours
  • Conduct research into Council and community matters as requested by the Mayor
  • Assist with the provision of communication services and advice to the Mayor as required, including editorial, presentations, speech notes, background information, media briefings and interview opportunities
  • Receive and respond as required to customer enquiries on behalf of the Mayor, ensuring the Mayor is informed of progress and outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related discipline
  • Experience in the preparation of media releases and media management including ability to facilitate positive media opportunities
  • Ability to create and produce social media content, including basic production and editing of video, photography and audio
  • High level presentation, interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders
  • Excellent communications skills with high level of interpersonal, relationship building and a proven capacity to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, and maintain confidentiality
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and balance competing priorities with flexibility to adjust plan to changing circumstances

About you

You will be an experienced and energetic communications professional who has demonstrated high level administrative support to Elected officials within a diverse and fast paced environment that has a strong communication focus.  You will also have an increased awareness for identifying potential conflicts of interest and managing these appropriately.

Salary: $92,375-$107,353 plus superannuation. This position is 35 hours per week, with an additional five hours of work that may be required each week. This salary range is inclusive of the payment for the additional five hours.
