VIFM has a vacancy for a Forensic Technical Assistant to work in our team of dedicated and multidisciplinary mortuary staff at the Institute located in Southbank, Melbourne.

About us

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is focussed on serving the community and the courts, with the responsibility of providing independent forensic medical and scientific expertise to the justice system, tissue for transplantation and to both teach and undertake research that will benefit the community.

Forensic Technical Services supports this with the provision of high quality autopsy, ancillary scientific and technical services to pathologists performing autopsies, in addition to assisting in the provision of a retrieval service for the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria, admission and release bodies from the mortuary, medical imaging, and maintaining instruments, equipment, stores and a clean mortuary environment.

About the role

As the Forensic Technical Assistant, you will assist in admission and release of bodies, prepare for viewing and identification, maintain cleanliness, and liaise with families, coronial staff and other stakeholders.

As VIFM provides a 24 hour per day service you must be available to participate in shiftwork on a seven day a week roster, including late shifts, night shifts and week-ends.

Candidates should be aware, that due to the nature of the work that VIFM undertakes, staff will be exposed to equipment, content and concepts of a graphical nature, such as forensic material, descriptions and images medical reports, and mortuary/laboratory environments. To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • sound knowledge of OH&S issues related to scientific or medical field

  • good interpersonal and problem-solving skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of people

  • ability to be flexible and adaptable, and maintain composure under pressure
  • proven ability to act with integrity and professionalism, and maintain confidentiality
  • strong computing skills, including demonstrated experience in databases or similar systems.
