Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School share a unique partnership in delivering a senior secondary program across the two schools. The new senior secondary campus at the Gasworks site in Fitzroy will enhance the longstanding relationship between the two schools and provide the primary location for the delivery of the senior secondary program.
The Campus Principal (Assistant Principal) will report jointly to the Principals of Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School.

School Context
Collingwood College is a government P-12 school established in 1882 and is located in the inner-city suburb of Collingwood, close to Melbourne’s CBD. The school currently has over 850 students enrolled and has had a steady growth in student enrolment in the past 5 years at both primary and secondary level. Within this time the school has also moved from high socioeconomic disadvantage to the mid-range of the School Family Occupation Index. Collingwood College is arranged with two sub-schools; Primary and Secondary. Each sub-school is arranged to create the most appropriate setting and approach for children at the different stages of their development. The Educational Programs consist of a P-5 Mainstream Program inspired by a Reggio Emilia Inspired approach, a specialist P-10 Steiner Program and a 6-10 Project-Based Inquiry Learning Program. Additionally, Collingwood College hosts Collingwood Alternative School who provide appropriate educational opportunities through a hands-on learning program. In 2020, Collingwood College (excluding CAS) has a teaching staff FTE of 3 Principal Class, 1 leading teacher, 4 learning specialists, 52 teaching staff, 16 music tutors and a support staff FTE of 19.

Fitzroy High School is located in North Fitzroy in the City of Yarra, which is part of inner Melbourne. Established in 1915, the school was closed in 1992 and reopened in 2004 as a direct result of local community action. The Student Family Occupation and Education (SFOE) Index indicates the school has a relatively high socio-economic background with the student body reflecting the population characteristics of the City of Yarra which is the most diverse Local Government Area in Australia.
The existing school buildings were refurbished prior to the reopening in 2004 and a new wing was built in 2009 to accommodate the introduction of the VCE. The school grounds are limited in size resulting in very little recreation space. On street frontages, the school is unfenced or there is low fencing reflecting the welcoming ethos of the school and after school community use of its facilities is encouraged. The school has 600 students in 2020. A high demand for places at all year levels sees student numbers continue to grow with full enrolment in Years 7 to 10. The student community is diverse and reflects the inclusive nature of the school. In 2020, the Fitzroy High School has 46.2 equivalent full time teaching staff, including 4 Leading Teachers, 3 Learning Specialists and 2 Principal Class, and 17.3 equivalent full time Education Support Staff.

For over ten years Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School have had a successful partnership to co-deliver VCE, with teachers working across the two schools to plan together and improve student outcomes. The choice and breadth of VCE subjects available is increased by this collaborative arrangement and complemented by a range of VCAL and VET programs.

The educational and demographic context for students in inner Melbourne is changing fast and traditional models of primary, secondary and further education are likely to break down over the next decade, as are traditional pathways into careers. Our partnership enables the two schools to be ready to engage with future educational pathways and student needs.

By 2022:
¿ There will be a further increase in numbers of students attending the two schools; of which increased numbers will complete Year 12 or equivalent.
¿ There will be an expectation of more flexibility in learning, both with teaching modes and in different spaces and settings;
¿ As pathways into traditional careers become more uncertain, senior secondary schools will need to offer more choice, and support students to build more skills, ready to navigate their future beyond high school certificates;
¿ Students will increasingly need to consider what opportunities they will create for themselves, and need the attitude, personal resilience and relevant support to take this on.
¿ Parents and community members will need greater engagement with methods of teaching and learning and with career pathways, as expectations of school, teaching and learning among the 2022 school-leaver generation vary significantly from their parents’ experiences.

    The Campus Principal (Assistant Principal) will report jointly to the principals of Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School. The role of the Campus Principal (Assistant Principal) is to:

  • build on the collaboration and continuous improvement of both schools and oversee their continued joint provision of senior programs
  • work closely with the Steering Committee to develop the strategic plan for senior program provision that focuses on a culture of innovation and excellence and optimises educational resources and opportunities.
  • From 2022, the Campus Principal (Assistant Principal) will also manage the Fitzroy Gasworks Senior Secondary Campus (interim name).

    Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.

    The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.

    Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.


    Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:

  • supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators;

  • allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility;

  • supervision of the delivery of teaching programs;

  • management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff;

  • responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators;

  • contribute to the overall management of the school;

The vacancy is for one position only but has been advertised on both schools’ recruitment online portals in order to broaden the profile of the new campus and to widen the potential audience of prospective applicants. All applicants will be merged into one pool of applicants after the position has closed at both schools. All applicants will be considered equally, regardless of which advertisement they apply for.
Selection will be in accordance with merit processes and considered by a panel comprised of representatives from both schools.
The successful applicant will be attached to one of the two schools for administrative and payroll purposes, but will report jointly to the principals of Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School.
