Current Rotations/Networks (which may change from time to time) The NSW General Practice Procedural Training Program (GPPTP) is a 12 month Advanced Skills training program with the aim to produce doctors who are general practitioners with advanced skills able to deliver services to rural communities. Please see attached information sheet for further information on the Rural Generalist training pathway. The GPPTP involves advanced skills training at various facilities in specific specialities.
Main Purpose of Position Due to COVID-19 and the changes to college requirements during the pandemic, NSW Health may make changes to the recruitment process. Formal interviews may be conducted electronically rather than face to face however, candidates will be notified as soon as practical of any changes. 6

This is a 12 month training post as part of the Program in Obstetrics & Gynaecology for participants of the NSW Rural General Practice Procedural Training Program.
Trainees of the RGPPTP will be engaged under existing NSW Awards and determinations while undertaking the hospital component of training.
Trainees will commence or continue, general practice training following completion of the Advanced Skills Training year.
Position Requirements Appointment to this position requires:

  • Proof of qualification (MBBS or equivalent) and evidence of appropriate registration authority.

  • Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia

  • Completion of PGY1 and 2 (within Australia) is mandatory

  • Confirmation of General Practice training program Fellowship

  • Commitment to participation in a rotating 24 hr/ 7 day a week roster

  • Key accountabilities:
    Medical practice within your scope of practice as a Rural Generalist trainee including:
    Commitment to fostering and maintaining relationships with your respective Regional Training Organisation (RTO) or other general practice training provider
    Hospital based training for an advanced skill training year
    Practice in one advanced skill discipline
    Commitment to maintaining clinical standards through participation in professional development, operating within the agreed scope of clinical practice relevant to and advanced skills trainee and completion of the requirements of the advanced skills training pathway for the relevant advanced skill.
    Provision of evidence-based and quality clinical care of individual patients in all domains of medical practice:

    Patient interview
    Clinical examination
    Identification of clinical problems and health opportunities
    Plan of overall clinical care and health promotion
    Maintenance of concise but comprehensive, accurate, legible records of patient stats and progress and associated correspondence.
    Manage the administrative requirements of patient care including ensuring discharge summaries and medico-legal correspondence is completed with minimal delay.
    Participation in roster including after hours and weekend cover as required –
    Participation in educational activities as prescribed by HETI / RGTP / College
    Act in accordance with the Local Health District Values Charter and the NSW Health Code of Conduct.
    Research – Initiate, facilitate and cooperate with research projects.
    Quality – Contribute to and participate in appropriate quality activities to improve the standards of care to patients.

    Throughout the NSW Rural Generalist Medical Training Program (RGTP), the trainee will have an ongoing relationship with staff of the RGTP (HETI), relevant RTO and specialist colleges (refer to Pathway Descriptions).
    Supervision Arrangements
  • Each RGPPTP trainee will be allocated a Specialist Supervisor (during advanced skills training in the Local Health District), a GP Supervisor (during general practice training) and have access to a Medical Educator within the RTO and the Rural Generalist (Medical) Training Program staff for the duration of the program.

  • Balancing training and education requirements and service provision within the limitations of a busy public health service.

  • Maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, in close liaison with supervising consultants.

  • Maximising the efficient utilisation of the physical resources of the LHD, RGTP (HETI) and relevant College/s.

  • Being flexible with the work required in a range of rural facilities and locations.

  • Managing time and competing priorities to enable participation in peer review and mentor support activities to build supportive relationships and professional growth and development.

  • Developing clinical skills for a specific advanced skill set.

  • Participation in a rotating 24 hour / 7 days a week on-site roster, as per local arrangement.

  • Involvement in the management of sensitive issues in relation to critically unwell patients, including discussions around the end of life care.

  • Decision Making The trainee will be supported by senior medical officers to develop skills that will enable them to make effective decisions concerning patient care and ultimately work autonomously within their scope of practice.
    Communication The RGPPTP trainee will work closely with all members of staff and will be expected to:
  • Communicate and behave in a manner that is appropriate and respectful of patients, their carers/family and other staff members.

  • Communicate in a timely manner with RGTP staff, responding to requests and advising of issues / changes that may impact training circumstances and/or outcomes

  • Work co-operatively within a team environment and actively contributes to team activities including pro-actively participate in team meetings and decision making processes.

  • At all times, exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain confidentiality.

  • Performance Monitoring Participating in ongoing review of your clinical practice as per conditional registration guidelines;
    Participating in continuing medical education and professional development as covered by the supervision arrangements stipulated by the Medical Board; and maintaining professional competence.
    The RTO will monitor progress throughout the General Practice Training period for the program.
    Rural Generalist State-wide Director of Training (HETI) will oversee the progress and performance of trainees in consultation with the trainee, the LHD and the RTO.

    Selection Criteria 1: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
