Main Purpose of Position Due to COVID-19 and the changes to college requirements during the pandemic, NSW Health may make changes to the recruitment process. Formal interviews may be conducted electronically rather than face to face however, candidates will be notified as soon as practical of any changes.

A twelve month post in a busy regional Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology for trainees of the relevant colleges (RANZCOG, RACGP). This post would particularly suit trainees looking to develop a base line practical skill set in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice will be possible commensurate with level of expertise and experience.
Position Requirements Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of PGY1 and PGY2 years.

  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Australian Medical Board registration is to be current at all times.

  • Minimum 12 months employment within the Australian Health System in the previous 24 months.

  • Satisfactory report of clinical performance from Supervisor of Training

  • Intention to or already register with a nationally recognised training body (e.g. RACGP or RANZCOG).

  • Personal Qualities:
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

  • Demonstrated interest in general medicine and/or critical care training.

  • Clinical:

    This busy regional department with a large regional referral base features both routine and high risk obstetrics, gynaecology and associated maternal services.
    By the completion of this term the SRMO is expected to have acquired a good practical knowledge of common O&G disorders as well as confidence in the management of these patients, including the appropriate procedural skills. Also the trainee is expected to have knowledge of the common complications of labour and delivery, be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and understand the limits of their capability and know when to involve senior staff.

    The trainee will have a number of roles as designated below and will be expected to comply with standard procedures and protocols for managing common obstetric & gynaecological problems.
    The trainee will assist with patients in antenatal clinics and outpatient gynaecology, labour ward and with patients in the Emergency Department including attendance when required to assess Sexual Assault cases with a senior colleague.
    Daily ward rounds of antenatal, Postnatal and gynaecological patients, including the appropriate investigations and management of in-patient, meticulous medical record keeping and close liaison with Consultants, senior trainees and with delivery suite and ward nursing staff.
    Attendance and participation in educational and teaching sessions is expected along with regular theatre attendance and participation as available.

    Trainees are expected to learn ALS skills and become proficient to lead a Rapid
    Response. They are expected to participate in the hospital’s simulation program to develop teamwork and crisis management skills.

    Research and Teaching:
    There are regular departmental meetings including protected weekly teaching, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings in Trauma and ICU. Trainees are expected to attend, present and participate at these meetings.
    There are a number of ongoing research and audit projects going on in the department. Trainees are encouraged to be involved, and have recently presented at national meetings.
    Orange Health Service supports medical students from the University of Sydney and nursing students from Charles Sturt University. Trainees may be asked to assist with RMO, medical student or nursing student teaching.
    Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development:
  • Attending Hospital Grand Rounds and relevant Trainee weekly meetings.

  • Obtaining and maintaining Basic Life Support accreditation.

  • Undertaking the training requirements set out by RACGP or RANZCOG or other relevant professional body.

  • Providing evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education.

  • Orientation:
    The trainee will be required to undertake the core mandatory orientation to:

  • Gain knowledge and develop skills to work in a manner which promotes their own health, safety and security at work, including information relating to infection control and needle-stick injury.

  • Gain an understanding of child protection legislation policies and responsibilities associated with notifying and reporting issues about child protection.

  • Provide guidance on ways to perform their job in an efficient and effective manner. Review the code of conduct including the behaviours and standards expected of Health Service Employees.

  • Understand the principles of waste management and the local processes in place which are designed to reduce waste.

  • Gain an understanding of the administrative procedures relating to the performance of their work.

  • Develop an understanding of the legislative and industrial context in which they work.

  • Gain information on the Health Service Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

  • Gain education and training in the minimisation and management of aggression, Work Health and Safety, Fire Safety and quality improvement processes.

    Orange Health Service is a 270-bed major non-metropolitan referral hospital, serving a population of 300,000. Since the move to the Bloomfield Campus, it constitutes the largest Rural Campus in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the regional trauma centre for Western NSW and has a fully FACEM staffed ED. The Intensive Care Unit is the referral unit for the Local Health District. It is a Level 5 Unit and is staffed accordingly. There are a comprehensive range of specialist services including almost all medical and surgical services, with the exception of spinal, burns, cardiothoracic and neurosurgical. Of note, there are services such as interventional cardiology, an endovascular suite, and excellent on-site digital radiology, including a 3T MRI and 2 LINACs for radiation oncology. Orange Health Service also has acute specialists in cardiology, renal, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, haematology, neurology, ophthalmology and specialists in medical and radiation oncology. There are also local specialists in palliative care, nuclear medicine and dermatology.

    Orange Health Service is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University. There is an excellent record of success in the ACEM professional exams and also future placement with metropolitan hospital training programs.

    Key Internal and External Relationships The trainee reports to the Supervisors of Training within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
    Trainees will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in a broad range of specialties.
    There will be a close working relationship with nursing and ancillary staff within the Emergency Department, Delivery Suites, operating theatres, and General wards.

  • Supervision Arrangements The Consultants and Senior Trainees working within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology will provide supervision and advice. The Supervisor of Training will provide formal assessment and feedback during the rotation.

    Supervision of the trainee in normal hours of work:
  • The trainee will receive full direct supervision and support from the Department Consultant. As such daily supervision is available at any time.

  • The trainee will have access to a senior supervisor at all times.

  • Supervision of the trainee after hours:
  • The trainee will be able to call the Consultant on call for support and supervision after hours at any time via Switchboard, or by mobile telephone.

  • The trainee will have limited supervision responsibilities with regard to the Junior Medical Officers.

  • Annual Performance Evaluation and Development Review (e.g. in-training assessments).

    Selection Criteria 1: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia

    2: Successful completion of PGY1 and PGY2 years, including terms in Emergency Medicine and ideally Obstetrics & Gynaecology, with a minimum of 12 months experience working within the Australian public health care system within the previous 24 months.
