Current Rotations/Networks (which may change from time to time) Wollongong Hospital is part of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local health District. There are potential opportunities to work across the district in Shellharbour and Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital as part of this appointment as well.
Main Purpose of Position Due to COVID-19 and the changes to college requirements during the pandemic, NSW Health may make changes to the recruitment process. The Career Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for provision of independent and effective medical care of patients under the supervision of Specialist staff.

Position Requirements 1. Clinical
The provision of emergency care to the patients of the Emergency Department at Wollongong Hospital.

  • Supervision of the care provided by Junior Medical Staff in the Emergency Department.

  • Participate in a seven day per week roster which includes evening and night shifts.

  • Assessment of patients presenting through the Emergency Department.


  • The technical procedures which the doctor is expected to perform competently under supervision are:
  • Lumbar puncture

  • Spirometry

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (basic and advanced life support)

  • Ventilation including simple airway measures

  • Defibrillation

  • Venipuncture

  • Intravenous cannulation

  • Arterial blood collection

  • Urethral catheterisation

  • Drainage of pleural effusions

  • Drainage of ascitic fluid

  • Performing an ECG and interpretation

  • Infiltration with local anaesthetic including ring blocks

  • Intramuscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous injection

  • Setting up IV drips and managing fluids

  • Bandaging

  • Suturing and wound care

  • Passing an intragastric tube

  • Application of plaster to a closed fracture

  • Management of plaster

  • Syringing wax from ears

  • Packing a nose

  • Removal of a non-central foreign body from the eye

  • Reduction of a dislocation

  • Reduction of a simple fracture

  • Draining an abscess

  • Joint aspiration

  • Aspiration of spontaneous non-tension pneumothorax

  • Insertion of an intercostal catheter

  • Endotracheal Intubation

  • Proficiency in Basic and Advanced Life Support Skills

  • 2. Research and Teaching
  • Participate in or conduct research projects within the Department as required by the Director of Emergency Services.

  • Participate in research projects, agreed to by the Director of Emergency and Director of Medical Services conducted by other hospital departments or recognised authorities, where these are relevant to the Department.

  • Attend regular teaching sessions to enhance continuing medical education.


  • 3. Orientation
    The Doctor will be required to undertake the core mandatory orientation to:
  • Gain an understanding of the organisational values, goals and ethics.

  • Gain knowledge and develop skills to work in a manner which promotes their own health, safety and security at work, including information relating to infection control and needle stick injury.

  • Gain an understanding of child protection legislation policies and responsibilities associated with notifying and reporting issues about child protection.

  • Given guidance on ways to perform their job in an efficient and effective manner; and the code of conduct and ethics, including the behaviours and standards expected of Health Service Employees.

  • Understand the principles of waste management and the local processes in place which are designed to reduce waste.

  • Gain an understanding of the administrative procedures relating to the performance of their work.

  • Develop an understanding of the legislative and industrial context in which they work.

  • Gain information on the Health Service Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

  • Gain education and training in the minimisation and management of aggression, Work Health and Safety, Fire Safety and quality improvement processes.


  • 4. Supervision
    The Doctor will be required to provide supervision support to Trainees, Interns and Residents during shifts rostered.

    5. Other responsibilities
    In addition to the core competency standards, the doctor is expected to comply with legislative policy / protocol requirements as they relate to:
  • The supervision requirements as set out by the Australian Medical Board.

  • ISLHD's performance management Policy.

  • Occupational Health and Safety requirements as an employee.

  • Local Background & Environment The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Hospital District (ISLHD) is responsible for funding, organising and delivering public health services in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. The area administered by ISLHD stretches along the coast south of the Sydney Metropolitan area and spans the four local government areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven. The area’s population is over 400,000 and is growing by 0.9% per annum.

    The Illawarra has a varied ethnic make-up and reflects the NSW state average in its Demographics and socio-economics.

    Wollongong Hospital is a level 9 Unit of a major regional hospital located in the Northern Illawarra, approximately 60 minutes south of Sydney CBD. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult Intensive Care and Coronary Care units.

    Wollongong is the primary referral hospital for all the Illawarra hospitals, but lacks Cardiothoracic Surgical services. Patients requiring these services will be referred to St George Hospital. Radiology services including x-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound are available 24 hours. Reporting by Radiologists occurs in hours and after hours in a timely fashion. Angiography studies are available on request. A cardiac catheter lab is on site and managed by the hospitals cardiologists. 24 hour pathology services are provided on site, including Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Serology.

    A wide range of Medical Consultants are available, including Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Endocrine, Renal, Oncology, Haematology, Rheumatology and Geriatrics. Surgical consultants available are General, ENT, Urology, Vascular, Orthopaedics, Plastics and Maxillofacial, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neurosurgery. Both Paediatric physicians and Surgeons are on staff.

    The doctor will take part in a rotating 24 hours roster and will be supervised by Emergency Consultants. Other staffing on site after hours includes Anaesthetics, Medical, Surgical, O&G, ICU and Paediatric Trainees.

    St George Hospital is the usual networked tertiary referral hospital. For transfer of critical care patients, the hospital utilises the Medical Retrieval Unit for adults and NETS for children. This may take several hours depending on the workload of the retrieval units.

  • Supervision Arrangements Supervision requirements of the Medical Officer in normal work hours are
  • The CMO is to provide clinical supervision to Trainees, Residents and Interns.

  • The CMO is supervised by the Staff Specialist.


  • Supervision requirements of the Medical Officer after hours are
  • The CMO is to provide close clinical supervision to the Trainees, Residents and Interns.

  • The CMO is supervised by the Specialist on-call.


  • Challenges/Problem Solving
  • The ED is often a busy environment and doctors are exposed to increased workloads. The supervising doctor provides assistance in managing the volume and may deploy medical staff from the rest of hospital to assist.

  • In the event of access block when there are patients on ambulance trolleys waiting to be off loaded, please liaise with the Nurse Unit Manager in improving the patient flow.

  • In the event of excessive patient load, please contact the Medical Administration on duty or on call to deploy medical staff from the rest of the hospital to assist.


  • Decision Making CMOs are encouraged to make decisions independently for low acuity cases such as those triage 4 or 5 presentations e.g. minor complaints. CMOs are also advised to seek the advice of senior staff if at any time they are not sure of the situation despite how trivial it may be. Other more complex cases are to be discussed with a senior clinician.

    Please refer to clinical guidelines on the intranet for management of common emergency presentations. Consult with other specialities or Emergency Staff Specialist on duty or on-call for any complicating cases.

  • Performance Monitoring The doctor is responsible for

  • Maintaining his / her professional competence.


  • The CMO is to have three monthly reviews with their assigned clinical supervisor as nominated by the Director of Emergency Medicine / Director of Emergency Medicine Training who can supply reports on the Medical Officer’s performance.
