AusIndustry’s Support for Business Division actively and directly supports Australian businesses to grow and transform for the benefit of all Australians. The Division helps its customers become strong and self-reliant Australian businesses that are competitive in a national and global environment.

The Business Outreach team consists of Regional and Business Development Managers who work directly with Australian businesses to provide targeted advice and support, connecting them to relevant programs and services across all levels of government. This team is a part of the AusIndustry national outreach network which extends across Australia, with offices in every state and territory and across regional areas. The network is mobile and engages face-to-face with the people who create, build and run Australian businesses to help them grow and succeed.

  • highly developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to successfully navigate difficult conversations, and represent and speak on behalf of the department at public events;
  • a capacity to show a high level of initiative and to remain strongly motivated while working independently;
  • knowledge of government programs and their delivery; and
  • knowledge of metro and surrounding regions, its key stakeholders and priority business sectors for the capital city where the position will be based (either Hobart, Melbourne or Perth).

What you will do

As the AusIndustry Business Development Manager, you will act as a first point of contact for customers interested in support through AusIndustry programs and services in metro areas. You represent the department in your region and build and maintain key stakeholder networks to capture and distribute business intelligence and maximise opportunities to promote the programs and services of AusIndustry.

In particular, you will:

  • Maintain knowledge of industry and business profiles, as well as knowledge of issues impacting on industry and business within the State/Territory
  • Develop networks and foster effective working relationships with key stakeholders including senior representatives of industry, businesses, community organisations and state governments
  • Maintain a very detailed understanding of the Department’s current business programs, and maintain an awareness of emerging programs that may have relevance for businesses in the region
  • Based on a strong track record of assistance and advice, establish a reputation as a credible representative of government for information and referrals to programs and services
  • Develop and implement promotional strategies and work plans, and manage marketing and event activities within the State/Territory office boundaries, including sponsorship development
  • Prepare responses to ministerial requests including liaising with internal and external stakeholders and preparing briefs and ministerial correspondence
  • Act as a key source of business intelligence for the Department, and capture and analyse business and economic intelligence of relevance to the department's interests in the state.

Location: We are looking to fill three (3) Business Development Manager roles – one in each Hobart (TAS), Melbourne (VIC) and Perth (WA).


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

The successful candidate will be required to hold a current Australian driver’s licence for this role.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This recruitment process is being used to fill three (3) current ongoing Executive Level 1 positions. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing Executive Level 1 vacancies should they become available within 12 months form the date advertised.

The Business Development Manager will be expected to travel around the metro and surrounding region where they are based (either Hobart, Melbourne or Perth).
