The Role:
Orthotic Prosthetic Technical Officers are an essential part of the Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit. They are responsible for the fabrication and finishing of a wide range of orthoses and prostheses. This Grade One Orthotic Prosthetic Technical Officer is a foundation position within the team. The successful applicant will be required to work closely with other technicians and clinicians to manufacture orthoses and prostheses and the various parts of these to a high technical standard.
They will be responsible for managing their own workflow and time to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner, and that they maintain stock levels they are responsible for. They will have the ability to transfer solutions from one task to another, and have or develop the skills to provide customised solutions for individual patients, in collaboration with the clinician. They will also be expected to adhere to the department’s stringent OH&S policies.
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • be highly motivated, with a sound work ethic and a commitment to high standards of quality in their work;

  • demonstrate sound working knowledge of small hand tools, and larger workshop machinery;

  • have a practical knowledge of manufacturing techniques in some of the areas of plastic work, fibreglass lamination, excellent finishing skills including buffing, grinding and sewing;

  • understand and commit to safe work practises, with WH&S knowledge required;

  • have excellent communication skills, to fit with a dynamic team of both experienced and developing practitioners;

  • be able to adopt computer literacy relevant to WH&S recording, and job tracking;

  • be willing to learn new techniques, skills and fabrication methods as introduced to the service;

  • Job suited to persons who have a practical trade background, or practised in carpentry, metal work, plastics work, upholstery or fitting and turning.
