About the team

The Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) was recently established to manage Australia’s radioactive waste in line with domestic and international regulations, deliver and operate Australia’s National Radioactive Waste Management Facility, engage with other governments, industry, stakeholders and local communities and centralise best practice and knowledge about radioactive waste management, including developing a disposal pathway for intermediate level waste.

The Indigenous Engagement (IE) section supports the National Radioactive Waste Management (NRWM) Facility program by leading consultation with Aboriginal communities involved with the delivery of the facility. Overall the IE section role is to ensure best practice is used in engaging with our First Nations stakeholders, including; ensuring effective consultation and policy decision opportunities are implemented via a co-operative approach between the Government and Indigenous peoples; access to the economic and employment benefits are provided; and cultural heritage associated with the site is effectively managed in partnership with the relevant traditional owners.

Experience working for the Commonwealth Government at a senior level will be highly regarded.

What you will do

As the Assistant Manager you will be required to contribute to the management of the team and provide guidance and support to APS staff. You will:

  • produce written materials such as Ministerial briefs and correspondence, other briefings as well as range of policy, position and meeting papers
  • work with a wide range of stakeholders to meet policy objectives, including businesses, researchers, internal program delivery partners and across government
  • research and analyse to support complex policy development, implementation and evaluation including evaluation of metrics
  • apply your critical thinking and analytical skills to develop and provide strategic, timely and accurate advice on solutions to complex policy problems
  • engage directly with Aboriginal stakeholders, to inform them about the Facility, understand their views and seek solutions that maximise the outcomes for all communities involved in the Facility establishment process
  • contribute to communication strategy, products and events, including e-publications and database maintenance.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under section 8(1) of the 'Racial Discrimination Act 1975'. This vacancy is only available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait people.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Applicants must undertake a pre-employment security assessment and subsequent security clearance. All staff are required to have a minimum baseline security clearance however some roles will require a higher level security clearance. If you are offered a role and do not have a current security clearance, we will work with you to arrange for this to be undertaken.

This recruitment process is being used to fill a non-ongoing Executive Level 1 position for an initial 12 month period.
