The Role

As a member of the Science Strategy and Policy team in DSTG, the successful candidate will assist with the development and implementation of strategy and policy to support the delivery of scientific advice and innovative technology solutions for Defence and national security. They will be involved in the implementation of the Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030, as well as shaping DSTG’s response to broader Defence strategic guidance. They will be required to prepare advice on the application of DSTG’s resources and scientific developments to meet Defence requirements and support DSTG’s senior leadership at various departmental and inter-departmental fora.

The successful candidate will also assist with delivery of DSTG’s enterprise management function, including performance reporting and risk management. They will assist with the management of DSTG administrative policy and prepare briefs and correspondence as required. It is expected the successful candidate will lead various aspects of the work associated with this role.

About our Team

The Science Strategy and Policy team in DSTG is responsible for developing strategy and policy to support DSTG to deliver outcomes for Defence. This is achieved through the provision of advice on the capacity and capability of DSTG to deliver scientific support and innovative solutions for Defence, ensuring DSTG’s strategic direction aligns with broader Defence guidance and Government objectives, coordinating DSTG’s contribution to Defence and whole-of-government strategic policy and supporting management of the enterprise.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this role will have a STEM background and experience with the development and implementation of policies and strategies to realise departmental and Government objectives. The candidate will be able to work independently with minimal direction and be able to drive their work to completion. They will be able to manage short-notice, reactive tasks alongside more involved project-based work. The ideal candidate will have experience preparing a range of different material, including briefing material, strategies and implementation plans. They will be comfortable working in a fluid environment currently undergoing transformation where priorities and responsibilities can change at short notice. Experience with agile approaches would be valued.
