The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia's national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.
The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General's Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Overview of the Australian Border Force:
The Australian Border Force (ABF) is Australia’s customs service and border enforcement agency. We support national interest through enabling legitimate trade and travel while protecting Australia’s border.
The ABF plays a critical role in preventing, deterring and detecting the unlawful importation or exportation of prohibited goods into and out of Australia, as well as facilitating legitimate trade and travel. We are Australia’s second highest revenue collector. To manage the border effectively the ABF works domestically, internationally, and in the Australian maritime domain.
Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) Program:
The BFORT program is an intensive twelve-month training program designed to prepare you for a career in the Australian Border Force.
You will undertake a mix of classroom-based and on-the-job training . The training is undertaken at an ABF College campus and various ABF locations within the State location. Successful completion of all modules is essential to ensure you are able to graduate as a Border Force Officer.
Upon successful completion of the BFORT program you will graduate as an Australian Public Service Level 3 (APS3) Border Force Officer.

Our work is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may be required to undertake shift work as part of your role. Busy periods tend to align with peak travel periods, including school holidays and Australian events. Opportunities for officers to take leave during peak periods may be limited.

The BFORT program is highly competitive with a number of stages within the recruitment process. Each Stage is outlined below. You will be advised if you are successful at each stage prior to progressing to the next.
Stage 1 – Online application
As part of your application, you will need to provide:
Stage 2 – Cognitive ability assessment
If successful at Stage 1, you will be invited to complete an online cognitive ability assessment. This measures verbal, abstract, and numerical reasoning. Practice tests can be found here .
Stage 3 – Revelian reliability assessment
If successful at Stage 2, you will be invited to complete an online questionnaire including a number of questions regarding your beliefs and attitude towards various work-related issues. More information on this will be provided once applications have closed.
Stage 4 – Video Interviews
If successful at Stage 3, you will be invited to complete a video interview. The video interview will ask questions about your skills and capabilities and why you are interested in working for the ABF.
Stage 5 – Virtual assessment centres
If successful at Stage 4, you will be invited to attend a Virtual Assessment Centre. More information will be provided at this time. Virtual Assessment Centres take approximately two hours to complete and include participation in a written exercise, role play and a behavioural based interview.
If you successfully complete Stage 5 you will be placed into a merit pool. We will use this pool to fill courses. Courses will be conducted in States/Territories based on operational demand. It is unlikely courses will be offered in all States/Territories.
Prior to being offered a position in a course you will be required to progress through the Mandatory Conditions of Engagement. This comprises a medical, fitness and psychometric test and obtaining an ESC and AGSVA clearance.
Medical, Fitness and Psychometric Testing
Assessments will be completed where possible close to your home location. The medical and fitness assessments are usually completed in a single appointment with the medical completed first. If you pass the medical, you progress to the fitness assessment. The psychometric assessment will involve online testing and a clinical interview with a psychologist conducted over the phone or by video.
AGSVA and ESC clearances
If you pass the medical, fitness and psychometric testing we will initiate your ESC and AGSVA Baseline Security Clearance
