About the team Critical minerals are essential inputs for the technologies of our modern world, including telecommunications, electronics, renewable energy, defence and electric vehicles. Growing demand for these products represents an economic opportunity for Australia, with our significant geological reserves of many critical minerals; as well as an opportunity to position Australia as a sustainable, ethical and secure supplier of critical minerals in order to help diversify global critical minerals supply chains that are currently highly concentrated.

The Critical Minerals Facilitation Office (CMFO), established on 2 January 2020, is driving the Australian Government’s agenda to grow our critical minerals sector, including opportunities to increase downstream mineral processing capability in Australia. The CMFO is leading a national effort underpinned by the COAG Critical Minerals Development Roadmap, which was agreed by the Australian, state and territory government Resources Ministers in April 2020.

Our ideal candidate The CMFO is seeking a highly motivated officer with qualifications and/or experience in minerals processing or major projects such as infrastructure, mining and other heavy industry. Applicants with chemical engineering, chemistry or metallurgical qualifications are particularly desirable.

What you will do
  • As part of a small team, you will be supporting the delivery of the Critical Minerals international engagement strategy including leading the development of strategic partnerships with key countries.
  • Provide advice on the foreign investment applications review process in the critical minerals sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with and form productive working relationships with stakeholders, regulators, international counterparts.
  • Work with states and territories on implementing the National Critical Minerals Roadmap, including progressing innovation hubs and precincts and ethical certification.
  • Draft communications (including the development of CMFO newsletters, media publications (twitter), papers for an international audience, presentations and fact sheets.
  • Manage the relationship with key financiers to support Australian critical minerals processing projects (including managing the relationship with NAIF, EFA, CEFC, IPFA and private sector players (Macquarie and Super Funds).
  • Contribute to a broader range of CMFO tasks, including detailed business cases, ministerial and departmental correspondence, written and verbal briefings.
  • Ability to attend meetings, conferences and workshops representing the Department.

Eligibility To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
